Mapgies legend Alan Shearer has urged Newcastle United’s board to make major changes this summer after a disappointing Premier League season ended with a 2-0 defeat at Fulham.
The Magpies finished 12th in the EPL with 49 points, a sharp drop from last season’s fifth-place finish on 66 points, and the worst finish since the year before the PIF takeover and Eddie Howe’s subsequent arrival.
Howe is expected to remain in charge and start next season on the St. James’ Park touchline, but the pressure around
him will only increase with each passing loss after a campaign defined by inconsistency and poor league form.
“I think that’s clear now for everyone to see that Eddie needs to refresh, he needs to ship six or seven out and get six or seven in,” Shearer said on the May 24 BBC Match of the Day show.
The comment came after Newcastle suffered their 17th league defeat of the season at Craven Cottage. Issa Diop and Tom Cairney scored for Fulham, leaving the Magpies with another flat performance to close the campaign.
Newcastle are already facing changes, with recent club legend Kieran Trippier set to depart, and veteran Emil Krafth also on his way out. Other veterans are about to hit the end of their contracts, including Fabian Schar, whose situation remains unresolved despite a late contract offer to extend his time in Tyneside.
Anthony Gordon is expected to join Bayern Munich if Newcastle and the German club agree on a fee, while Sandro Tonali and Tino Livramento have also attracted interest and could be on their way out as well.
With several senior players, some of them members of Howe’s usual XI, either leaving or linked with moves elsewhere, it’s obvious Newcastle’s summer window will define the direction of Howe’s reset.
The Magpies must nail the transfer market, contrary to what they did last summer, and in Shearer’s eyes, at least a third of the squad should be shuffled. Tall task, that one.
