Late in the second quarter of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Week 9 game against the New York Jets, quarterback Patrick Mahomes took a deep dropback and unloaded for a downfield throw on third-and-long. Before he could finish the windup, Jets edge rusher David Bailey buried him in the ground and caused a game-changing turnover with the fumble.
It was one of the many times Bailey worked past right tackle Jaylon Moore to get hands on Mahomes in the pocket.
The worst look from the play was Mahomes staying down on the field in pain afterward. He grimaced and reached for his throwing arm, letting it hang as he walked to the sideline with concerned teammates around him. Athletic trainers checked him out for a while before he tested it out with an uncomfortable-looking warm-up throw on the sideline.
Shortly after that, there were no trainers surrounding him and he had his helmet on. He took the field with the offense after a missed field goal by the Jets and threw a quick pass to tight end Travis Kelce before scrambling up the middle to set up a last-second field goal before halftime.
Before head coach Andy Reid went into the locker room, he shared his view of Mahomes’ injury with CBS sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson.
“He hurt his elbow a little bit,” Reid said. “It’s sore, but he’s a tough kid.”
The Chiefs lead 14-12 at halftime. Mahomes has 120 yards on 11 of 15 passing with two touchdowns along with seven rushing yards.
