After years of complaints from fans, fighters, and Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) CEO Dana White, the promotion has officially started rolling out its brand new rankings system powered by Meta AI.
For years, UFC’s rankings have been a constant source of frustration. Whether it was inconsistency, fighters remaining ranked despite inactivity, bizarre movement from week to week, or perceived bias from the media panel, White has made it very clear that he has never been a fan
of the current system.
So, a few years ago, White vowed to change it with AI.
And now, that day has finally come.
“I’ve been unhappy with the rankings and always believed there had to be a better way,” White said. “We’ve always been a company that runs toward technology and innovation, and now we’ve worked with Meta to integrate it directly into our rankings system. I’m excited to see how this innovation can help change the sport for both the fans and the athletes.”
Today (Mon., June 22, 2026), UFC released its new Meta rankings (check them here) and announced that it “will begin the transition of its official rankings from the traditional media panel toward Meta UFC Rankings, offering an innovative new approach to rankings determined entirely by fight data.”
In a press release, UFC explained how the new system will work:
“Meta UFC Rankings will be automatically calculated and updated by Monday following every official UFC event. To determine individual athlete ranks, the system combines statistical modeling and machine learning with the deep domain expertise of the UFC. It evaluates a comprehensive set of objective metrics, including outcome probability, win type, fighter trajectory, and weight-class sensitivities.”
In other words, not all wins and losses will be treated equally.
Under the new ranking system:
- The always-debated pound-for-pound category is gone.
- Finishes will apply a small bonus to fighter ratings
- Decisions will not factor in.
- Beating a higher-ranked opponent will carry more weight than defeating a lower-ranked one.
- A dominant finish over a Top 5 contender will matter more than a close decision over an unranked opponent.
- The system will also account for recency, with more recent fights carrying greater weight, while inactivity penalties will be applied to fighters who go extended periods without competing.
UFC claims that by relying on measurable fight data, the Meta UFC Rankings will better reflect a fighter’s true competitive performance inside the Octagon.
Meta Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg also weighed in on the launch.
“I’m excited to work with Dana and the UFC to build a system that analyzes fighter performance at a much deeper level, helping create more transparent and accurate rankings,” Zuckerberg said.
Of course, because this is UFC, the rollout was not exactly flawless.
When the brand new rankings launched, the website was a complete mess, with several random fighters appearing in the wrong spots and the rankings looking more broken than revolutionary.
Thankfully, UFC has since fixed the rankings website.
Still, the era of Meta UFC Rankings has officially begun. Whether it actually solves the promotion’s longtime rankings problem — or just creates a brand new one — remains to be seen.
