No. 8 Tennessee is set to travel to No. 2 Duke on Tuesday night for their second and final preseason scrimmage. It’s a return trip for Tennessee, which hosted Duke last season at Food City Center. The Blue Devils won that one going away, thanks to a big performance from Cam Boozer.
Now, as is customary in today’s college basketball world, both sides have reloaded and have completely new looks. Tennessee’s first look at their new roster wasn’t a pretty one, with the Volunteers fading away in the second
half to lose to Xavier.
Duke has added former Wisconsin guard John Blackwell, who averaged north of 19 points per game last season. They also picked up five-star big men Cameron Williams and Joaquim Boumtje-Boumtje. This in addition to five-star guard Deron Rippey Jr., who Tennessee also pursued.
For Rick Barnes, this is a spot for him to see how his team responds to his coaching. The defensive and rebounding effort simply wasn’t good enough last week against Xavier, and he undoubtedly let them know all about it. For all the new faces, it will be interesting to see how they respond after their first lackluster performance.
Note: Tennessee sharpshooting guard Tyler Lundblade is not expected to play in this one as he continues to work back from minor back surgery.
