LeBron James’ free agency has carried on through much of July, but is presumably coming to an end soon. On Thursday, James spoke at Fanatics Fest and told the crowd, “I won’t hold you guys up too much longer,” suggesting a decision would come soon. Even with that quote, it seemed obvious that a decision wouldn’t happen until this week at the earliest, as James was unlikely to drop the news on a weekend that featured the World Cup final and a major golf championship.
But now those things are in the
rearview mirror, and perhaps that means it’s decision time. Former NBA player Patrick Beverley certainly thinks so, as the 12-year veteran took to social media on Monday to say that he’s heard James will reveal his next team today.
It’s unclear if Beverley, who played with James on the Los Angeles Lakers in 2022-23, has any reason to believe that claim, or if he’s just having fun on social media. Anyone who has followed this era of the NBA knows that the three-time All-Defense selection is always looking for a way to have a good quote go viral. But then again, NBA players do move in their own social circles, and it’s entirely plausible that Beverley has actually heard something.
James, a 22-time All-Star who is the NBA’s all-time leading scorer, is widely expected to choose between the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers. It’s unclear how he’ll choose to announce his next (and presumably last) team. But it could happen at any moment!
