Welcome to this week’s TWIS Notes! The post season is just one series away, but that doesn’t mean a great deal isn’t going on right now. It is.
Hannah Camenzind Adds Another National Award to Her Mantle
On Tuesday, it was announced Camenzind was named Softball on Sports Illustrated Player of the Week for her performances against UNO and Iowa across four games. It was the second time this season she received the honor from SoSI, first doing so in late February after the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Offensively, Camenzind was simply dominant at the plate
going 9-for-13 with 2 doubles and 9 RBI’s for a .692 batting average and eye-popping .750 OB%.. She scored 4 runs as well in raising her batting average to .408.
Tuesday night in the circle, she came on in relief against UNO to throw 4 innings of scoreless ball allowing only two baserunners while improving her record to 5-0 with a 1.40 ERA and a WHIP of 1.200.
Jordy Frahm Grabs Her Third Big Ten Pitcher of the Week Honor
On Monday, Frahm was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season and the second consecutive week.
She went 2-0 with a 0.64 ERA against Iowa going the distance in both run-rule shortened starts while throwing 11 innings last weekend. She tossed a shutout in the 13-0 5-inning win in the series finale Saturday to kick off the team’s Senior Day celebration in style. Frahm struck out 17 while walking only two and Iowa could only manage a .111 batting average getting only 4 hits in her two starts.
She added a double, a home run and three RBI’s and scored a team-leading 6 runs for the Huskers.
This Week’s HUSKER SOFTBALL Nuggets
- In case you haven’t heard – and if you haven’t, a hearty Corn Nation welcome back to you after a well-deserved vacation – Troy Dannen finished off the Senior Day celebration by announcing the field at Bowlin Stadium would be named after Coach Rhonda Revelle. For all the details as to why the honor is very deserved, please CLICK HERE to check yesterday’s article.
- Also, Apple? If you could stop auto-completing “Bowlin” to “Bowling” every time I hit the space bar to spell our favorite stadium’s name, it would be much appreciated.
- With the final sets of Big 10 play coming up, the Huskers lead the Big 10 with a 20-1 record and only Oregon and UCLA not mathematically eliminated from contention. Strengthening the Huskers odds is the fact that those two play each other this weekend. But the Huskers are in the driver’s seat and are the only team which controls their own destiny – here are the paths to a Big 10 regular season title:
- If the Huskers take two of three or sweep Penn State, they are the champs.
- UCLA is one game behind but the Huskers won the season series, so a tie in the standings goes to the them. Therefore, the only way UCLA can win is to sweep Oregon and hope Nebraska wins one or less, or win 2/3 and hope Penn State sweeps the Huskers.
- Oregon has only one path – sweep UCLA and hope the Nittanies do likewise in State College.
- Penn State, against a weak schedule, went 0-6 against ranked teams and did not win a conference series against any team in the top half of the standings.
- Add all that up and draw your own conclusions if making a guess as to how the weekend plays out.
- Anyone who attended the Friday doubleheader saw five or six (or more) deep shots in the two games which were greeted by roars (or gasps) of the crowd, most of whom know what a home run looks like when it comes off the bat, or at least one in contention. On that day every single one died on the warning track. I asked my son Drew what could cause this as he a meteorologist who is paid to know such things. The most likely cause? Per Drew, now and then winds can blow much, much stronger than the ground winds, sometimes as low as only 40-to-50 feet above. Makes sense to me – and the Huskers parked 3 on Staurday, so all was once again right with the world.
- Nebraska’s schedule online has not yet been updated, but the athletic department stated in a press release Monday that all three of this weekend’s games against Penn State. will be televised on the Big 10 Network. The Huskers are currently ranked #2 in the country in three polls and #3 in the fourth.
- On3 Softball’s online bracketology remains unchanged in its 4/29 update. It still projects Nebraska as a #6 national seed hosting Auburn, UNO and Howard in the Lincoln NCAA Regional.
- Finally, four Huskers were tabbed by Softball America as Top 50 players at their position going into the month of May. Jordy Frahm and Alexis Jensen were tabbed the #1 and #4 two-way player players in the country. In addition Ava Kuszak was the No. 12 shortstop and Hannah Camenzind was the No. 30 outfielder.
