The LSU vs. SEC cage match is over for the moment. The SEC met Thursday and while the SEC didn’t expel the Tigers, the conference is apparently still considering some sanctions. The league is big mad at football coach Lane Kiffin, and there may still be a desire to go after him. Former Duke and current Texas A&M coach Mike Elko compared it to parenting, and that once dad (aka commissioner Greg Sankey) raised his voice, LSU backed down.
But is it over?
Well, for now, perhaps. Sanctions are not off the
table, and the enmity is at least out of the public eye for the moment.
Well, between the conference and the football program, anyway. Recognizing opportunity, Louisiana politicians have chomped down like Huey P. Long at a prohibition barbecue.
We’ve talked about Senator John Kennedy and Congresswoman Julia Letlow, but not Governor Jeff Landry, who says the SEC is trying to “villainize” LSU. Well really, governor, Lane Kiffin did that all by himself.
Well, not all by himself.
Act II is on deck, and the leading actor is now basketball coach Will Wade.
As you may know, Wade has also challenged the SEC on professional athletes. Among the players who might raise the SEC’s ire: former St. John’s star RJ Luis, Saliou Nang, and Yam Madar, all of whom have professional experience. In Madar’s case, he is 25 and has years of professional experience.
Wade also brought in four other European players with professional history.
LSU is much more of a football school, and this year’s team has national championship aspirations. Prior to backing down, LSU was ready to go down with the ship.
But they didn’t, and if they aren’t willing to risk everything for almighty football, they’re highly unlikely to do it for a basketball team that’s probably going to be average at best and, if the SEC gets tough, then denuded as well.
