In Week 4, the New Orleans Saints will face their first NFC South opponent of the season when they host the Atlanta Falcons for a Monday Night Football showdown on Oct. 5 in the Caesars Superdome.
The Saints-Falcons rivalry dates back to Nov. 26, 1967, when New Orleans defeated Atlanta 27-24 at Tulane Stadium during the Saints’ inaugural season. Monday night will mark the 114th meeting between the two franchises, including one postseason matchup, with Atlanta holding a slim 58-56 edge in the all-time
series.
There have been plenty of memorable moments between these longtime rivals, but none more significant than the “Domecoming” game on Sept. 25, 2006. The Monday night matchup marked the Saints’ return to the Superdome following Hurricane Katrina and became one of the most iconic nights in franchise history.
Steve Gleason’s blocked punt, recovered by Curtis Deloatch in the end zone for a touchdown, provided one of the defining moments of the night as the Saints went on to defeat the Falcons 23-3.
Twenty years later, these longtime rivals will meet again under the bright lights of the Superdome as the NFL and New Orleans commemorates the anniversary of a game that meant far more than just football to the city and its fans.
