The USWNT will be back in action in October after four months away from international play, and head coach Emma Hayes has just named the 26 players who will make up the senior national team for key friendly matches against Spain.
Three players are receiving first-time senior call-ups after stellar league performances over the past few months. All three — Trinity Byars, Evelyn Shores, and Pietra Tordin — have extensive experience at the youth national team level.
Four other players earning call-ups
were not a part of the last camp. NWSL Golden Boot leader Ashley Sanchez returns to the national team after last making an appearance in October of 2024. Bay FC goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz earns the nod after getting called up to the senior national team for the first time nearly a year ago. Center back Naomi Girma and defensive midfielder Sam Coffey make their returns to the squad after missing the previous camp due to injury; however, head coach Emma Hayes noted that Girma suffered a knock today that may require her to be replaced by another player.
Speaking to the media after the announcement, Hayes emphasized the importance of player development at this point in the World Cup cycle, particularly after being asked about absences like Jaedyn Shaw and Ally Sentnor. She revealed that those two players will be part of the U-23 roster, which is set to be announced on Wednesday, September 30th, who will be playing two matches against the Dominican Republic on home soil during this window. Hayes expressed a preference for players like these to get guaranteed minutes with the U-23 side over sitting on the bench with the senior national team.
Hayes ultimately stressed that the player pool is large, and her goal is development beyond the 2027 World Cup. On the games in this window, she noted that “there won’t be wholesale changes from one game to the next.”
