We have some good memories of facing Barça at Stamford Bridge. That unfortunately has been limited to the men’s team, since Chelsea Women have never beaten the Blaugranas at home.
It seemed heartbreak would
start early with Clàudia Pina barely missing the target early in the match. But Ellie Carpenter with a great effort at the edge of the box off an Aggie Beever-Jones assist would correct the record for us.
Hope was well alive until Ewa Pajor got the tying goal from a corner kick where the Blues didn’t know how to clear the ball from danger. However unlike several other circumstances against Barça where we’d start well and fall off as the match went on we actually did the opposite. As surprising as it may sound if it wasn’t for a great Cata Coll save followed by the ball hitting the post on two attempts from Wieke Kaptein, the Blues would deservedly be in front.
That was the case even after the technical fault that stopped the match for a few precious minutes in the first half. Whereas in the second part of the match, Barcelona got the possession but not the plays upfront. It was in fact Chelsea who had the lion’s share of chances to get the full points in dispute.
- A midfield trio of Keira Walsh, Erin Cuthbert and Wieke Kaptein to start the match today.
- Ellie Carpenter, take a bow!
- Believe it or not, Chelsea were extremely unlucky not to go out today with three points.
- Next up: Everton at home in the Women’s Super League.
- KTBFFH!
