Women’s Hockey (12-0)
The women’s hockey team stayed unbeaten with back-to-back 4-0 wins over Robert Morris. The defense allowed just 31 shots on goal in the series, and Katie DeSa stopped all of them in one of the best combined
efforts from the defense all season. Tessa Janecke’s 10-game point streak ended in Game 2, but she did have a goal and an assist in Game 1. Maddy Christian scored two first period goals in Game 2 to pace the offense.
The team will be idle this weekend before resuming conference action next weekend against Syracuse.
Women’s Soccer (9-7-3)
The women’s soccer team fell 2-1 to UCLA in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament. Kaitlyn MacBean scored the only goal of the game for Penn State in the first half to give the Nittany Lions a 1-0 halftime lead, but the defense surrendered two goals in the second half.
The team will now await its NCAA Tournament fate. Penn State is sure to make the tournament but will not host first and second round games. The selection show is Monday, November 10.
Women’s Volleyball (13-9)
After finding a way out of the early-season rut, the women’s volleyball team dropped a five-set match to Michigan and got swept by Indiana at home. Kennedy Martin’s 27 kills were not enough to overcome a poor fifth set against the Wolverines. Against Indiana, Penn State was swept despite posting a slightly higher hitting percentage and more blocks. The Hoosiers dominated the second set and recorded six aces to stay a step ahead of the Nittany Lions.
Penn State will hit the road to take on Purdue on Friday (5:30pm on Big Ten Plus) and Illinois on Sunday (4:30pm on BTN).
Men’s Soccer (5-8-3)
The men’s soccer team fell 1-0 to Ohio State on Friday in the penultimate regular season game. The offense could not get anything going against the Buckeyes’ defense, and the tough defensive struggle ended with Ohio State on top 1-0. Jonathan Evans made four saves to keep Penn State afloat, but the offense could only muster two shots on goal.
Penn State will host Michigan in the regular season finale on Friday (8pm on Big Ten Plus).
Field Hockey (7-10)
The field hockey season came to a close with a 4-2 loss to Rutgers on Friday. Ella Jennes and Natalie Freeman each scored a goal for the Nittany Lions, but Rutgers never trailed in the game and jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period. It was a rough ending to another tough season. Sophia Mannino was named Second Team All-Big Ten for her strong performance on defense this season.
