So, yeah. Not a great night for our boys’ playoff chase hopes. Except for the Rangers, every team that the Red Sox are competing against for a Wild card spot won. Those Rangers lost to the Astros, their third loss in a row, as they drift out of the race.
The Yankees and Mariners joined the Stros with wins over the Twins and Royals, respectively, putting the Sox in the third Wild Card spot, 2 games behind the Yanks and .5 behind Houston, while the Mariners hold onto a slim .5 game lead over Houston for
the AL West.
Now it’s the Cleveland Guardians we need to worry about and, unfortunately, they have completely and totally forgotten how to lose. They can’t even lose when they blow a 9th inning lead, as they did last night against the Tigers, only to plate four in the 10th to win their fifth game in a row and ninth out of their last ten.
So what should we as Sox fans be rooting for? We may have reached the point where it’s better for the Astros the bury the Rangers for good even though, in doing so, the Stros would more or less cement at least a Wild Card berth. But scoreboard watching right now is kind of beside the point. The Red Sox are control of their own destiny. They need to win.
