Jaylon Thompson writes about how Vinnie Pasquantino has been a hot hitter.
The league has taken notice of Pasquantino’s surge. He has the fourth most home runs by a left-handed batter in Royals history and needs just six RBIs to reach 100 for 2025 after already setting a career-high in homers.
“I’ve seen him on quite a few stretches, but homer-wise, this is probably the longest,” teammate and outfielder Kyle Isbel said. “And I feel like, every time he comes to the plate, he is a dangerous hitter all
the time and he is finding a groove right now.”
The Royals will push Noah Cameron’s start to ease his workload.
His workload is as high as it’s ever been, really,” general manager J.J. Picollo said. “We’ve asked a lot out of Noah going every fifth day. It’s something, unfortunately, in the Minor Leagues, they don’t get to do except once every fifth time around because they go Tuesday-Sunday, so that added workload is quite a bit on a young pitcher.
“He’s handled it great, but just evaluating his last outing, a little bit of command, a little bit of velocity. When the ball starts being up in the zone, it’s a pretty good sign a guy is fatigued, and it may have been the best time to give him a rest.”
Stephen Kolek will get the start.
The Royals will see how Kolek fares against a potent Tigers offense. He primarily pitches to contact with a 50.6% groundball rate. Opponents also chase his “gyro” slider, as it registered a 24.3% whiff rate, per Baseball Savant.
“I think it just played,” Kolek said of the slider. “Historically, through the minor leagues, I had a sweeper that was really good. And then, as I learned other pitches, the sweeper kind of started to not be as effective. It was just kind of like, I’m not going to throw my fourth-best pitch. I’m going to use the one that’s producing. If the slider is producing, I’m going to throw it a little bit more.”
Cole Ragans will throw live batting practice today, according to Anne Rogers.
Will throw a live BP on Aug. 30, per general manager J.J. Picollo. No determination yet if hitters will be in the box, per manager Matt Quatraro. If all goes well, next step could be a rehab assignment.
J.J. Picollo doesn’t know yet who will be called up when rosters expand.
Bradford Doolittle at ESPN writes about what the Royals’ quest for a ballpark says about MLB’s future.
“The Battery is the best example in our minds,” Brooks Sherman said. “But you look around the league and you’ve seen all these [examples]. San Diego, what it did for the Gaslamp [Quarter)] there. Washington, D.C., Colorado are great. We want to be additive to wherever we go. We want the live, work and play environment.”
The live, work and play dynamic. Those other venues have that but in different settings, from the urban core (San Diego, Denver) to a rehabilitated blue-collar district (Washington) to the suburbs (Atlanta).
These are contexts the Royals are sifting through now, making them a test case for ballpark development trends. If The Battery is the model, just where should that model be turned into reality elsewhere?
