Joe Willock appeared to have played his way firmly into Matthias Jaissle’s plans after Newcastle United rejected Besiktas’ summer approach and the midfielder responded with three goals in his first seven appearances of the season.
However, Daily Mail’s Craig Hope reported that the outlook on Willock’s Newcastle future has changed significantly, with no extension currently close despite earlier expectations that the 27-year-old would sign a new deal.
“On the subject of contracts, Confidential understands
nothing is close when it comes to Joe Willock,” Hope reported. “There was an expectation he would also sign an extension after Newcastle rejected an approach from Besiktas in the summer. That, however, is now less certain.”
Willock’s existing contract expires next summer, meaning he can sign a pre-contract agreement with a foreign club from January. Besiktas remains interested after president Serdal Adalı previously confirmed the Turkish club intends to return for the former Arsenal midfielder.
Hope added that “this is likely to be his last season on Tyneside” if the situation does not change, with Newcastle potentially prepared to explore a January sale rather than lose him for nothing.
That would represent a notable shift after Newcastle reportedly rejected a Besiktas offer worth around £17 million during the summer. Jaissle retained Willock amid injury concerns, and the midfielder has since made a strong start under the new head coach.
The contract issue now leaves Newcastle facing another decision before January: secure Willock beyond 2027, accept a midseason fee, or risk seeing him agree a free transfer abroad.
Should Newcastle make another push to extend Willock’s contract, or sell him in January if Besiktas returns with a significant offer? Share your thoughts in the comments.
