Germany’s World Cup campaign ended in disaster, and now the spotlight has shifted from the players and coaching staff to the people running the DFB. One of the biggest questions facing the DFB is whether sporting director Rudi Völler should remain in his position after yet another major tournament disappointment.
On one hand, Völler deserves credit for helping stabilize the national team during one of its darkest periods. He returned to the DFB at a time when confidence was at an all-time low, and his
leadership and experience were viewed as calming influences. However, results ultimately define success in international football, and Germany’s Round of 32 exit on penalties to Paraguay is impossible to ignore.
The decision to appoint Julian Nagelsmann initially looked like a bold move, but the project never produced the consistency many expected. Squad construction became a recurring issue, with questionable roster selections, positional imbalances, and a lack of attacking cohesion. While the head coach deserves much of the criticism, the sporting director also shares responsibility for the overall vision and direction of the national team.
The DFB now faces a crossroads. Does it simply replace the coach while keeping the same leadership structure in place? Or does it decide that a complete reset is necessary, beginning with the sporting director? If Germany truly wants to build toward UEFA EURO 2028 and the 2030 World Cup, the federation must honestly evaluate whether the current decision-makers are capable of leading that process.
There are arguments on both sides. Völler has decades of experience, strong relationships throughout German football, and a deep understanding of what the national team represents. At the same time, another disappointing tournament raises legitimate questions about accountability.
So should Rudi Völler keep his job with the DFB after Germany’s World Cup debacle, or is it time for new leadership from the top down?
