The Orioles are currently in possession of a wild card spot. This is not something that I thought I would be writing in mid-August. The idea of the Orioles getting into this position has seemed improbable throughout the season due to all of their flaws. This only seemed less probable at the beginning of this month when Mike Elias traded away a few players, subtracting from the team’s already-longshot chances.
The Rays-Yankees-Rays gauntlet was supposed to be what would sink them, and maybe it still
will, but three games into it, the Orioles have won three games and the competition has bumbled around so the O’s have themselves a wild card position. It’s hard to believe and it’s still true. Naturally, in this week’s podcast, I try to make sense of the O’s rising from the ashes like the phoenix, even though a sub-.500 team having a postseason place this deep into the season doesn’t make much sense at all.
As long as every other team is continuing to stay in the mediocre muck, maybe the record the Orioles need to get into the postseason is less daunting as it once seemed. Could 83 or even 82 wins end up doing it at this point? In this episode, I’m thinking about the math involved, what needs to keep going right for the Orioles, what could maybe start going better in another week or two, and I’m continuing to think about Gunnar Henderson, who is a crucial part of this effort.
