In this series, BFW looks back at all the members of the 2014 World Cup-winning Germany men’s national team — players and coaches — reflecting on their performance back then and checking in on where they are today. Today, we have the imposing defender who can keep attackers under control but not his coffee cups: Mats Hummels.
Mats Hummels’ role in 2014
Hummels started in all but one match for the Germans en route to their World Cup win, sitting out the 2-1 win over Algeria in the Round of 16. He also scored twice in the tournament:
the second goal in the 4-0 win against Portugal and the winning goal against France in the quarter-finals, both via headers.
The then 25-year-old also had a big hand in the fifth goal against Brazil in that legendary 7-1 win in the semi-finals: he won a challenge and proceeded to dribble up the pitch to create a numerical advantage in the Brazilian half.
What is Mats Hummels doing now?
Now 37-years-old, Hummels retired from international duty in 2023 and club football in 2025 after spending his career with Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, and AS Roma. He is now happily retired and enjoying life and partakes in the occasional “ThoMats Challenge” with former Bayern and Germany teammate and friend Thomas Müller. Hopefully Mats has kept his coffee cups in check since.
