Just when you think everything is sorted out with QB Brendan Sorsby, the former Indiana-Cincinnati-Texas Tech (sort of) quarterback reverses course in an attempt to enter the NFL’s Supplemental Draft process. Given the wild turns in the situation, it is entirely possible that the league denies his entry and everything gets thrown back up in the air again.
The Cleveland Browns now have another option at the quarterback position, with a chance to hit the “easy button” in finding the elusive “QB of the Future.”
In the “easy button” piece, I noted that there is no certainty in how a team finds a star quarterback. There are a few “can’t miss” prospects every five years or so, but even some of them end up missing. Instead, the “easy button” was about getting another shot at a young, talented quarterback without having to use a first-round pick and getting the chance to truly redshirt a young quarterback.
The reality could be that another team, by using a round higher selection or by coming out of the weighted lottery with a higher pick than Cleveland, could see the same “easy button” answer with Sorsby.
For the Browns, the Supplemental Draft should be a win-win situation.
There are a number of teams that do not have certainty at the quarterback position for this season or beyond:
- Cleveland Browns
- Atlanta Falcons
- New York Jets
- Pittsburgh Steelers
- Arizona Cardinals
If one of those five teams, including the Browns, select Sorsby, that puts one less in the running to draft a quarterback early in the 2027 NFL draft. While Sorsby could have been in next year’s draft, thereby providing another top prospect to even things back out, there is no certainty he would have had the type of season or stayed healthy enough to be ranked near the top of the class.
Where the Supplemental Draft may not benefit Cleveland is if a team that has a starting quarterback on their roster ends up outbidding the five teams listed above, looking to draft and develop the talented Sorsby. The list of good teams or teams that seem set at quarterback that could take that swing is at least interesting:
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers
- Indianapolis Colts
- Miami Dolphins
- Carolina Panthers
- Buffalo Bills
- Detroit Lions
- Minnesota Vikings
- Kansas City Chiefs
If Sorsby ends up on one of those teams, the Browns search for a franchise quarterback could become more difficult, but it seems more likely one of the teams lacking a quarterback will pull the trigger.
We all know the history in Cleveland. What seems like a clear win-win often turns out to be anything but. For now, Browns fans can look toward the positives.
Which team do you think will win the bid for Sorsby? Do you think it turns into a win-win possibility for the Browns?
