West Virginia’s first road test of the season ended without a breakthrough, as the No. 10 Mountaineers battled No. 16 Akron (2-0-1) to a 0–0 draw on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium.
WVU (2-0-1) rolled through its opening two matches with nine goals, but the Mountaineers couldn’t find a finish against one of the stingiest defenses in college soccer. Marcus Caldeira led the attack with two shots, including the team’s lone effort on target. Nacho Martínez, Carlos Hernando, Antonio Lima, and Ethan
Dekel Daks each added an attempt, but none found the frame.
At the other end, keeper Marc Bonnaire turned away two shots to post his second shutout in as many games. He got help from his back line, with senior captain Carlos Hernando making a crucial goal-line clearance in the 29th minute after Akron’s José Pedro slipped a shot past Bonnaire.
West Virginia now heads home for another ranked showdown, hosting No. 20 Gardner-Webb on Wednesday, Sept. 3 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
