Vanderbilt opened with a 45-3 win over Charleston Southern last week, their fourth consecutive win in a season opener. The previous season-opening win was 2024’s 34-27 win over Virginia Tech, which propelled Vanderbilt to a 7-6 season and its first bowl game since 2018, and its first winning season since 2013.
This time around,
the return game is in Blacksburg. Virginia Tech is 0-1, having had a terrible offensive day in its season opener against South Carolina last Sunday, a 24-11 Hokies loss. Vanderbilt is still 4-6 all-time against the Hokies, though, and the last time they played in Blacksburg was an 18-0 Virginia Tech win on November 4, 1989, the last of a five-game losing streak for Vanderbilt against Virginia Tech — the first two of which featured Hall of Famer Bruce Smith smothering the Vanderbilt offense.
