The Cincinnati Reds played baseball against the Chicago Cubs on Saturday afternoon up in Wrigley Field. We won’t get into the nitty gritty of what kind of score ended up on the scoreboard – that’s the kind of thing that teams who are in playoff chases get to care about.
Over here at Red Reporter, we get to follow the exploits of one Sal Stewart as the season dwindles to a close. And thankfully for us, Sal keeps providing us with the good stuff.
Sal swatted a 105.9 mph hammer some 431 feet into the
left-center seats at Wrigley for his 30th homer of the season during Saturday’s game. In the process, he became just the 14th big league rookie to ever post a season with at least 30 homers and more than 100 runs batted in, while also joining inner-circle Hall of Famer Frank Robinson as the only rookies in Reds history to hit at least 30 dingers.
As MLB’s Sarah Langs pointed out, 9 of the aforementioned 14 rookies with 30/100 seasons came after the Rookie of the Year Award began in 1947, and all 9 of those rookies took home the award at season’s end.
Pretty rarified air Sal finds himself in these days. I wonder if the front office of the Reds can put anyone else around him and build a winner while he’s in a Reds uniform the next few years…
