The good news is that Liverpool Women earned their first point of the season over the weekend when they managed a 1-1 draw with Brighton. The bad news is they remain level on points with last-place West
Ham after the Hammers also drew—and that it felt like they should have had more.
Liverpool were ahead thanks to a first half goal from Beata Olsson but in the end they couldn’t hold on and suffered a late goal against as Rusul Kafaji equalized in the 93rd minute to turn victory into dropped points for a side that increasingly looks a coin flip to survive in the Women’s Super League.
“Sometimes football is just cruel,” centre half Jenna Clark said following the match. “I felt like all the girls left their all on the pitch. We couldn’t really ask for more on the day. We kept possession well, created good chances, got forward, defended well, so it’s frustrating to lose a goal right at the end.”
It doesn’t get any easier for the Reds, either, with title contenders Chelsea and Arsenal up as their next two before they kick off December with a match against mid-table Aston Villa, with a game against last-place West Ham on the 14th of next month potentially key to their top flight survival hopes.
