Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Brewers fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
In this week’s Reacts survey, we asked fans if they think it’s time for Brandon Woodruff to retire. Here are the results:
As you can see, roughly two-thirds of fans said it’s time for the veteran right-hander to retire. Woodruff, 33, has made just 32 starts over the last four seasons,
and he’s spent far more time on the IL than he has on the field. While he’s still an effective starter when healthy — 2.98 ERA and 3.20 FIP this year over 45 1/3 innings — the injuries have piled up.
The latest news on Woodruff is that he had an MRI in Milwaukee this week, and the news is not good: he has a new injury to his anterior shoulder capsule, the same injury that has caused him issues in recent times. His surgeon, Dr. Keith Mesiter, will provide a second opinion before determining a timeline. It seems very possible that this is the end of Woodruff’s time as a Brewer (and maybe as a major leaguer).
In a bit more positive news, one of this week’s national SB Nations Reacts surveys asked fans about the NL Cy Young race, and Jacob Misiorowski finished on top:
The 24-year-old right-hander garnered 63% of the vote, outpacing Cristopher Sánchez (yes, his name is misspelled in the graphic) at 14%, Yoshinobu Yamamoto at 12%, and Chris Sale at 11%. Across 18 starts this season, Miz is 10-4 with a league-leading 1.62 ERA, 2.10 FIP, and 167 strikeouts over 111 innings, putting him on pace to surpass 200 innings and potentially 300 strikeouts, something we rarely see in today’s game — the last pitchers to reach that threshold were Justin Verlander (300) and Gerrit Cole (326) in 2019, and there have been just five total pitchers to hit 300 strikeouts since 2003.
For what it’s worth, Misiorowski is the heavy favorite on FanDuel Sportsbook, with -600 odds (bet $600 to win $100), with Sánchez a distant second at +600 odds (bet $100 to win $600). There’s still plenty of season left, though, so we’ll see what happens over the next two-plus months.
