What is the story about?
The preseason is over, which means the Cincinnati Bengals will have their 53-man roster set soon. Then comes the formation of the 16-man practice squad.
Here are some rules that govern who can and who can’t join practice squads in the NFL:
- Teams can keep up to 16 players (17 if they keep one international player).
- Rookies obviously are eligible.
- Players who were on the active list for fewer than nine regular-season games during their only season in the league.
- Up to 10 players per team who have played no more than two seasons in the NFL.
- Up to six players per team with no limit to their number of seasons played.
- The number of players in the last two categories cannot exceed 10 players.
The practice squad may sound like it’s no big deal, but everybody on the practice squad is perfect. Not only do they regularly see game time, but in such a violent sport, depth is such a big deal.
