The Texas Rangers have recalled utility man Cam Cauley from AAA Round Rock and have signed free agent pitcher Trevor Richards to a major league contract, the team announced today. Cauley and Richards fill the two open spots on the active roster that resulted from rosters expanding to 28 today. The Rangers had two open 40 man roster spots, so there was no need to clear a 40 man roster spot for Richards. In addition, the Rangers have signed pitcher John King to a minor league deal.
Cauley was the obvious
option to come back up when rosters expand. He was in the majors from late-June to mid-August in a bench role, and has experience playing pretty much everywhere on the diamond other than first base, catcher and pitcher. He’s a very good baserunner who gives the Rangers someone who can pinch run late in the game, be plugged in defensively wherever needed, and pinch hit against a lefty.
We mentioned yesterdaythat the Rangers could opt to add someone from outside of the organization to their active roster as their additional pitcher. Richards ended up being the guy, and was, per the beats, signed yesterday, so he is eligible to be on the team’s postseason roster, should the Rangers make it to the postseason.
Richards, a 33 year old righthander, was originally signed as an undrafted free agent by the Miami Marlins in 2016, and since making his major league debut in 2018, has bounced around as a journeyman, with Texas now being his tenth team. He started the 2026 season with the Phillies, was sold to the Chicago White Sox in May, and then was released by the White Sox yesterday after having throw 2.1 scoreless innings against the Astros earlier in the day. For the season, he has a 3.53 ERA, 4.23 FIP and 3.80 xERA in 66.1 innings over 43 appearances.
King, a lefthander who turns 32 later this month, returns to the Rangers, where his career started. A 10th round senior sign out of the University of Houston in 2017, King put up a 4.27 ERA in 126 innings over 87 appearances for Texas from 2020-23 before being sent to St. Louis at the 2023 trade deadline as part of the Jordan Montgomery trade. He was non-tendered by St. Louis after the 2025 season, signed by the Marlins this offseason, then released by the Marlins last week. King has a 3.99 ERA, 4.04 xERA and 4.86 FIP in 49 innings over 50 appearances in the majors this year. He gives the Rangers some additional bullpen depth at AAA.
