The colloquially called “Great American Small Park” has looked awfully big for the Cincinnati Reds hitters facing the best pitching that the Dodgers have to offer. And it doesn’t get much easier with Blake Snell taking the mound, as the Dodgers are one win away from sweeping the Reds in a fourth straight series dating back to last year—counting both the regular season and playoffs.
Considering Sunday’s loss to the Marlins in which Emmet Sheehan pitched quite well, Dodger starters have held opponents
scoreless through 20 innings, 14 of which have come against starters Tarik Skubal and Yoshinobu Yamamoto. On top of being dominant, Skubal and Yamamoto share the fact that they deviated somewhat from their regular approach in their last outing against the Reds, but in opposite directions—Skubal leaning more heavily on the fastball, while Yamamoto threw it even less than he normally does.
A critical distinction must be made between these two previous starters and Snell. Unlike the pair, Snell will be facing the Reds for the first time this season since he was not on the schedule in the three-game series at Dodger Stadium last week. And speaking of a track record against the Reds, Snell will have fond memories of his last time pitching at this stadium. Back in 2024, still with the Giants, Snell delivered one of the greatest outings of his career when he shut out the Reds in a 3-0 win—the two-time Cy Young winner punched out 11 in what, to this day, remains the only complete game and the only shutout of Snell’s illustrious career.
