The Kentucky Wildcats fall to the Ole Miss Rebels on Saturday afternoon at Kroger Field with a final score of 30-23. The Rebels’ defense was strong in the second half against the Wildcats, only allowing one touchdown.
Mark Stoops and the Cats got out to an early lead on their home turf, but just couldn’t hold on, allowing a 20-3 run after going up 10-0 early on.
The Wildcats were without running back Jamarion Wilcox once again, but the run game was consistent all afternoon. Seth McGowan had the Wildcats’
two touchdowns in Saturday’s matchup against the Rebels. McGowan ended the game with 15 carries and 93 yards. Dante Dowdell also saw his fair share of carries on the ground; he finished the game with 14 carries for 56 yards.
Kentucky’s starting quarterback, Zach Calzada, was unable to find the end zone in his first conference game of the season. Calzada exited in the fourth quarter on Saturday with what appeared to be a right shoulder injury, affecting the Wildcats’ starting quarterback.
Freshman Cutter Boley came into the game and got the Wildcats within striking distance while down 27-20 before being stuffed on 4th down to effectively end the game.
With Eastern Michigan coming to Lexington next weekend, Stoops could give Calzada a rest due to injury. The Wildcats fall to 1-1 and will hope for good news this week regarding their starting quarterback’s injury.
After the game, both Stoops and offensive coordinator Bush Hamdan said they’ll evaluate the QB room this week while monitoring Calzada’s injury.
“I think Cutter deserves the opportunity,” Stoops added.
Looks like there’s a good chance Boley is QB1 for at least next week.
