The Washington Commanders season opener came down to a 2-point conversion against the Philadelphia Eagles. What’s most frustrating about the loss to Philadelphia is seeing how a lack of execution in key moments throughout the game ultimately cost Washington points. Washington has no one to blame but themselves.
Washington’s offense didn’t come alive until the fourth quarter, but for the first three quarters against the Eagles, the unit couldn’t get favorable second and third downs to stay ahead of the chains.
Jayden Daniels completed nine passes on 23 attempts for 64 yards through the first three quarters; the only chance that the Commanders had at success offensively was with running back Jacory Crosky-Merritt. Bill finished the game with 63 yards on 16 attempts, but was the catalyst behind the run game, wearing down the Eagles’ defense as the game went on. Between the pressure Jayden faced on his dropbacks and the wide receivers not getting open quickly enough for him (and drops), Washington has to find an immediate fix for its pass-game issues.
On the Trap or Dive post-game recap, Dre and I dissect the Commanders mistakes that led to their 24-22 loss to the Eagles. The defense undoubtedly kept Washington in the game by containing Saquon Barkley and consistently getting home on Jalen Hurts, preventing him from attacking the secondary. Between Washington’s two first-time coordinators, Daronte Jones had the most impressive debut, and his scheme highlighted the front seven’s potential to take over games. However, even with a strong debut, Washington lost the explosive-play battle, couldn’t create a turnover, and the Eagles scored three touchdowns by capitalizing on just a handful of defensive mistakes.
