Saturday was a classic tale of two halves. The first was well, well below par – a bit of a throwback to some of the performances we saw under Leam Richardson last season. It was stale going forwards, pedestrian and a little kamikaze defensively and just, all in all, not very good.
The second was by no means 2011 Barcelona, but the players showed a lot of character to fight back in a game where we looked like getting nothing, and you have to give credit for that.
Plaudits will of course go to one man,
but it was a good effort all round to fight ourselves back into the game, and then hold off the pressure from the visitors. Here’s what the fans had to say after the match…
A tale of two halves
The opening 45 minutes was not a pleasant watch, which is an issue. When we play badly it isn’t pretty, and we look disjointed.
But credit where it’s due, the players kicked it up a notch in the second half, and a couple of bits of quality won us the game.
The fans were happier with what they say after the interval, but couldn’t ignore what came before it…
Kyreece Lisbie
It’s looking like our player-of-the-season race only has two horses in it: Jack Marriott and this guy.
He’s just been a breath of fresh air, hasn’t he? A proper old-school winger whose first thought is always to face up his man and try and make something happen. And he’s showing he’s got the end quality to boot as well.
He’s certainly become a fans’ favourite extremely quickly…
An ugly win
You’re going to have to grind your way to a fair few ugly wins in a League One season, particularly one when you want to be in with a shout of promotion. And we’ve now had two in two games.
You’re not always going to play your best, most entertaining football, but you still need to find ways to pick up results. The fans weren’t overly impressed with what they saw across the 90 minutes, but were delighted with the reward at the end of it…
Conclusion
Straight after the game I wasn’t too hasty to celebrate all that much. We’ve seen performances like this far too often for my liking since Richardson took over, and I don’t want these kinds of showings to become the rule rather than the exception.
Having mellowed out a little, I can look back and say that’s a good result, in horrible conditions, and the players reacted really well to a poor first half. Richardson just needs to make sure that doesn’t happen again.
