Last season 38 ACC regulars accumulated something they, and their coaches and teammates, probably preferred they’d skipped — namely more turnovers than assists.
Often as not turnovers are mistakes that disrupt offensive designs, shorten or shortcircuit possessions, and fuel opponents’ scoring. But some of those mistakes are over-reaches, calculated gambles, rather than mental errors or physical miscues.
You can’t assume a propensity for committing turnovers is an inexcusable flaw in a player’s game.
Turnovers can be signs of willingness to take creative license. Hopefully to good effect, as Maryland’s Len Bias demonstrated 40 seasons ago. To illustrate: Bias, twice the ACC’s scoring leader and Player Of The Year (1985, 1986), had nearly three times as many turnovers as assists (89-33) his senior season.
We’ll see if two of this year’s most prominent ACC players, their teams’ leading returning scorers, again fit the Bias contour, as they did in 2026.
Malik Reneau paced Miami in turnovers last season, trading ballhandling precision (99 turnovers, 72 assists) for scoring as he achieved the ACC’s fifth-best point average (18.9). A product of Florida power Montverde Academy, the 6-9 Indiana transfer joins Virginia’s 6-9 Thijs De Ridder as the only returnees from the 2026 All-ACC first team.
De Ridder, UVa’s top scorer in 2026 (15.6), seems a bit of a reach at the projected ACC Player Of The Year — he was 14th in the ACC in both scoring (15.6) and rebounding (6.2 per game) — but there’s no clear favorite otherwise.
Last season Boston College and Syracuse each had four regulars with more turnovers than assists in 2026. Orange starter Donnie Freeman led his team in turnovers and scoring (16.5-point average). He’s now at St. John’s.
The picture was even more muddled at Georgia Tech, where three starters each amassed more turnovers than assists while suffering the league’s worst group turnover margin (-2.19). That fumbling trio included the Jackets’ leading scorer Kowacie Reeves Jr. and rebounding ace Baye Ndongo, now plying his craft at Pitt.
Aptly, last year’s most profligate mishandling crews (BC, Georgia Tech, Syracuse) all have new coaches this season.
At the other end of the ballhandling spectrum Duke, Virginia, and UNC had no regulars with more turnovers than assists in ’26. Those teams’ controlled attacks left all three among the league’s top-five in ratio of assists to turnovers.
Among the ACC’s four best-finishing clubs, only Miami had two mishandlers, the creative Reneau and Ernest Udeh Jr.
