Former Bayern Munich head coach Julian Nagelsmann took over the German national team with great optimism, but it has fizzled in a bad way after being eliminated from the World Cup on penalties by Paraguay.
After the match, DFB director Rudi Völler went to bat for the ex-RB Leipzig and Hoffenheim manager.
“He’s still a top coach, he’s a fighter, he will regroup after such a painful defeat and come back ready to attack again. I know a lot of people won’t understand that after we’ve been eliminated like
this. I’m still convinced he’s probably the right man to continue. But I’m not the DFB on my own. It’s not my decision alone,” Völler said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
Those last two sentences are key. While Völler might have Nagelsmann’s back, it remains to be seen how the other power brokers gauge what can only be said to be a disappointing performance in North America. Yes, the Germans escaped the group stage, but being upset by Paraguay is not likely to go over well.
