A window of opportunity has presented itself for Paul Wanner at Bayern Munich even with the arrival of Luis Diaz from Liverpool. The long-term injury to Jamal Musiala combined with the departures of Kingsley Coman, Thomas Müller and Leroy Sané has opened up spaces in Vincent Kompany’s attack. Wanner, Lennart Karl, and Jonah Kusi-Asare all impressed in Bayern’s preseason friendlies, and it might be the situation this season where Kompany will have to use some of his younger, fringe players in the squad
— something he has been criticized for not having done enough last season.
For Wanner, after a decent loan spell with Heidenheim, he has garnered interest from several clubs, and Bayern had said earlier this month that the door is still technically open for the 19-year-old to leave before the summer transfer window closes on September 1st. After Bayern’s preseason win over Olympique Lyon a week ahead of their Franz Beckenbauer Supercup win over VfB Stuttgart, Wanner had said that he is fully focused on Bayern for the time being, but he did not personally rule out the option of a move elsewhere.
Per information from Dutch outlet SoccerNews.nl journalist Mounir Boualin (via @iMiaSanMia), PSV Eindhoven have not given up on the idea of potentially signing Wanner this summer. The reigning Eredivisie champions are in active negotiations with the player and with Bayern with talks said to be progressing well. Wanner is open to making the move, knowing that he would more than likely be getting far more regular starting minutes with PSV under Peter Bosz than he would at Bayern under Kompany, even with the reduced attacking depth.
At this stage, the negotiations have gone well between all parties and a total agreement on personal terms between PSV and Wanner is close. As things stand, Wanner’s contract with Bayern runs through June 2027 and it is very much expected that Bayern will be bringing in one more attacker before the transfer window closes, whether it winds up being Chelsea’s Christopher Nkunku, Stuttgart’s Nick Woltemade, or someone else. Either way, it would be a player potentially taking minutes and opportunities away from Wanner, making it all the more logical for him to prefer a move to PSV.
