The Mets’ roster carousel continues to turn, as the team has placed outfielder Tyrone Taylor on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, optioned left-handed pitcher Brandon Waddell to Triple-A Syracuse, and called up utility player Jared Young and right-handed pitcher Kevin Herget.
Taylor’s injury makes it a near-lock that Cedric Mullins will play center field nearly every day for the remainder of the season, barring a very quick recovery by Taylor. Jeff McNeil still figures into the center field equation,
too, and Luisangel Acuña, who joined the team when rosters expanded yesterday, could see some time out there. Jose Siri has also logged three rehab games with the Mets’ Low-A affiliate in St. Lucie over the past week and could end up being available after missing the past several months with an injury of his own.
Waddell last pitched on August 31, throwing 4.1 innings with four strikeouts, two walks, and no runs allowed against the Marlins. In 31.1 innings with the Mets this year, he has a 3.45 ERA and a 4.53 FIP.
Herget was only optioned to Syracuse a few days ago himself, but the fact that Taylor hit the IL gave the Mets the opportunity to call him back up to the major league roster sooner than the minimum fifteen days for a pitcher. He has a 1.13 ERA and a 3.13 FIP in 8.0 innings with the Mets this year.
And last but not least, Young hit just .171/.222/.415 with three home runs and a 73 wRC+ in 45 plate appearances with the Mets earlier this year. He’s hit .306/.394/.570 with 16 home runs and a 152 wRC+ in 297 plate appearances in Syracuse.
