You read that right, Bayern Munich wants to extend both Leon Goretzka and Serge Gnabry after 2026. If you woke up from a coma and missed the last year, that headline would be unbelievable. However, for
those who have been watching, it makes all the sense. Both German internationals are seeing revitalized careers with both Julian Nagelsmann’s side and Bayern Munich, and the club will surely want to keep both players on board.
Reports from Kicker (via @iMiaSanMia) suggest that Bayern Munich is planning to hold contract plans with both Gnabry and Goretzka, after Dayot Upamecano has been resigned. While not top priorities, it is clear that Bayern want to keep both players, for the right price:
Further contract talks with Serge Gnabry and Leon Goretzka are planned for January (for now the priority is Dayot Upamecano). Both German internationals would like to stay in Munich, but the club’s bosses want to take their time to further assess the duo’s performances and make a final decision.
Most importantly, both players want to stay in Munich, but the bosses at the club want to wait and assess the players’ performances over the course of the season. Serge Gnabry hasn’t exactly been known for being consistent during his time at Bayern and it is not surprising that the club wishes to see if he can continue at the top level before coughing up the cash.
As for Goretzka, his consistency has been proved, and as long as Kompany sees a fit for the German in his squad, the partnership will most likely continue. Goretzka has suitors per Tobi Altschäffl, who reports that Fenerbahçe and Juventus are eyeing the midfielder on a January transfer, though neither Bayern or Goretzka are interested in such a deal.
Goretzka and Gnabry surely still have enough to add to this squad, but will need to make a personal choice as playtime will continue to diminish over the months with blooming young talent such as Lennart Karl and Tom Bischof moving up the depth chart. Will the Bayern veterans accept a more limited and lucrative deal or look elsewhere?
