Daniel Jacobsen looked like a star in the making, scoring
22 points and grabbing 7 boards, but foul trouble kept him off the floor in important stretches and Purdue’s guards tired down the stretch as Purdue fell to #15 Gonzaga, 78-72. It was an encouraging first display for Purdue which looked up to the task against a top-15 Bulldogs for forty minutes. Purdue’s offense got kick started early by two first time scorers. Luke Ertel and Antione West both made their first field goals of their career from the mid-range and Purdue went into the first half trailing just 36-33 as its offense started to find a rhythm with crisp ball movement and dominance inside by Daniel Jacobsen. That dominance carried over into the second half where Jacobsen would score on two early post looks, and then a finish at the rim off a CJ Cox feed. But with 12:51 to play in the game Jacobsen picked up his fourth foul of the game. The Zags would take advantage of it right away, going on a 7-2 run. Nathan De Sousa’s first bucket of the game, a lay up, would give Gonzaga a 67-58 lead with 5:48 left to play. Then Gicarri Harris would go to work, and Purdue would make a push late to close the lead. Harris would knock down a three and draw a foul to cut the Gonzaga lead to 67-60. Then Gonzaga and Purdue would trade free throws back and forth. Jacobsen’s two free throws with 3:44 would cut the lead to 68-64. Then redshirt freshman would drive through the lane, along the baseline, then find himself falling back on a mid-range jumper that would pull Purdue within two points. That’s when Purdue would run out of gas in its first game of the season. Gicarri Harris would air ball a three. Omer Mayer would add in his own air ball, and then CJ Cox would make it a trifecta late with the guards legs obviously gone after a strong push late. Purdue would be forced to play a foul game late and Davis Fogle’s two free throws to go up 74-69 would help seal the game for the Zags. Fogle tied Jacobsen’s game-high 22 points. For Purdue, Antione West had a strong showing in his first game for Purdue. Off the bench, West had 10 points. Purdue continued its struggles from three, knocking down only 5 of its 21 three-point attempts. Defenisvely, it was Gonzaga’s 34 free throw attempts that was too much to overcome.
Purdue moves to 0-1 on the season as Gonzaga claims its first program win over Purdue.
