Bayern Munich great Manuel Neuer is set to retire at the end of the 2026/27 season, marking the end of a defining and illustrious career. Despite the 40-year-old saying that he’s not taking a back seat, implying he’s still the #1 goalkeeper, his successor Jonas Urbig is fine with being an understudy for now.
“Of course, I’m always happy whenever the coach plays me. But the team knows that regardless of which goalkeeper is in goal, they can rely on him,” Urbig said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia).
“We saw that last season when Manu played, when Sven played or when I played. I’ll be happy if things go as good as they did last season. I’m just taking it game by game.”
For what it’s worth, Urbig was handpicked by Neuer. The former Schalke number 1 had a hand in picking the 23-year-old as his successor. Urbig will get there eventually, and he’s been patient enough to wait for opportunities to play. He’s also learned from the best so that’s a bonus.
