Lennart Karl’s emergence at Bayern Munich has created an interesting problem for the club — and the solution may depend heavily on what Michael Olise decides to do next summer.
According to Sport Bild’s Christian Falk, Bayern Munich is not currently negotiating a new contract with Karl. Instead, the club is watching Olise’s situation closely, with the French winger expected to make his intentions clearer by next summer. That leaves Bayern Munich with three potential paths forward for Karl.
Scenario No. 1: Olise stays, and Karl has to decide whether to wait
If Olise
signs a new contract, Bayern Munich will presumably build even more heavily around him. The 24-year-old would likely become one of the club’s highest earners alongside Harry Kane and Jamal Musiala while remaining a clear starter.
That would leave Karl looking at a Bayern Munich attack where Olise and Musiala are already ahead of him in the pecking order. For an 18-year-old who has already shown that he belongs at this level, that could raise an uncomfortable question: Where exactly is his path to becoming a regular starter?
Real Madrid has already been linked with Karl, and the Premier League could also become an attractive destination if his opportunities remain limited.
Scenario No. 2: Olise leaves, and Karl becomes part of the succession plan
If Olise decides to leave, Bayern Munich would almost certainly look to sign another player for the position. However, Karl’s situation would suddenly look very different.
Rather than simply being another academy product waiting for an opportunity, Karl could become an important part of Bayern Munich’s long-term planning. In that scenario, the club would have a strong incentive to offer him a significant new contract, potentially moving his salary from roughly €2 million per year into the €8 million to €10 million range.
That would represent a major commitment to a teenager who could eventually inherit Olise’s role
Scenario No. 3: Bayern Munich acts before Olise makes his decision
There is also a middle ground, and perhaps the most pragmatic one.
Bayern Munich could offer Karl a new contract now, before Olise makes his final decision. It would give the club greater protection around one of its most valuable young talents while avoiding the risk of waiting for Olise only to receive a “no.”
If Karl eventually decides that his future lies elsewhere, a long-term contract would also protect Bayern’s investment and market value.
Conclusion
Karl and Olise may have very different ages, roles, and levels of experience, but their futures at Bayern are becoming increasingly intertwined.
For Karl, the next major decision may not actually be his to make alone. It could depend on what Olise decides first.
