Dário Essugo’s hamstring issue suffered while on international duty with Portugal U21 has proven to be quite a bit worse than initially expected, with the 20-year-old evidently requiring surgery to deal with the problem.
The bad news was confirmed by Chelsea and the player himself earlier today. While neither put a timeline in his potential return — Essugo says “for a while” and Chelsea not even as much — hamstring surgeries usually involve multi-month recoveries.
This news comes just days after Moisés
Caicedo was forced to miss Ecuador’s game; thankfully Caicedo was back in the starting lineup for his national team tonight so hopefully his injury concern was nothing too serious.
Still, Caicedo’s primary backup missing extended time is not great news. Andrey Santos can help deputize, as can Reece James, but all these early-season injuries are becoming quite concerning.
Get well soon, Dário!
