The Huskies are led by first-year head coach Nick Oliver, who took over for Brett Larson at the end of last season. SCSU is off to a 1-2-0 start, opening the season with an overtime loss to Bemidji State before splitting a weekend series with Michigan
Tech. Junior Gavyn Thoreson leads the Huskies in five points, including a three-point performance in their most recent game, a 5-3 win against the Tech Huskies. In net, junior Yan Shostak has gotten the nod twice and has a .905 save percentage, while junior Patriks Berzins has seen one start and has a .909 save percentage.
The Eagles will likely face a confident Huskies team coming off their first win. BC, meanwhile, is looking to bounce back after a 3-2 loss to the Alaska Nanooks in a game where the Eagles never really pushed or generated momentum for themselves. It’ll be interesting to see if there are any adjustments in the lineup in response, or if this team simply had to learn the hard way that they need to play their own game rather than letting their opponent dictate the pace.
The Eagles have depth up front, but struggled to generate chances from the backend — which was only made worse by an injury to senior defenseman Nolan Joyce. The defense is extremely young and it showed last week; but with more game tape to study and more playing time, they likely will become more consistent.
Prediction: Not tempting fate with this one — go Eagles!
