With a free spot on the team’s 40-man roster (and another freed up by the move of Blake Dunn to the 60-day IL), the Cincinnati Reds made a pair of roster claims on Thursday afternoon.
Right Ron Marinaccio was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Pirates, while the club also announced the addition of righty Chase Solesky off waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays. Solesky was officially optioned to AAA Louisville after the moves, while Marinaccio was held on the active roster as a potential starter for Friday’s
series opener against the Washington Nationals in the wake of Hunter Greene’s move to the 15-day IL.
As it turns out, though, that won’t be the case. Marinaccio will be on the roster as a depth option, but it will be another Chase – Petty, in this instance – who’ll get the nod for the Bottom of the 1st for the Reds on Friday night in Washington. That’s according to C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic.
Petty, long considered a starting pitching prospect, has mostly worked as a reliever in his time with the Reds so far this season. That’s also been the case in his most recent outings with AAA Louisville, as he hasn’t pitched more than 2.1 IP with them since back on June 4th. So, the Reds will effectively be employing a bullpen game on Friday, with Petty leading the line first among the troupe.
The Reds will take on the Nationals at 6:45 PM ET on MLB.tv this evening.
