Commanders center Nick Allegretti suffered a calf strain on Wednesday, which caused him to leave training camp’s first practice early and with a trainer.
Head coach Dan Quinn updated Allegretti’s status before Thursday’s morning practice session, revealing the nature of his ailment. It is not expected to be a long-term issue.
“We’re still going through the evaluation process,” Quinn said in a morning press conference. “(It’s) not something we’re overly concerned about in terms of a long (-term) deal),
but I think I’ll know a little bit more through the weekend.”
The Commanders have a scheduled off day on Friday, which will give Allegretti another chance to rest.
Quinn also said that receiver Treylon Burks is dealing with some foot soreness that would keep him out of practice on Thursday. Burks’ foot situation is not considered long-term, but his troubling injury history magnifies even minor moments like these.
Burks had a solid first day, highlighted by this touchdown catch in the red zone.
On-site reporters chronicled the fact that Julian Good-Jones was working with first-team quarterback Jayden Daniels in the early going.
Sixth-round interior offensive lineman Matt Gulbin should also get a longer look with better units while Allegretti is out, which can be of benefit to a young player during training camp’s early stage.
Same goes for Good-Jones, who might not get tons of reps with Daniels.
“We just keep it going. Those are the (situations) were you move it around some,” Quinn said. “But, even within a practice, there are going to be times where a guys go up to the first group. Every player deserves a chance to go perform.
“…We have about four guys who can snaps, so we rotate that through.”
