The inaugural campaign for Kyle Whittingham as the Michigan Wolverines’ head coach is about four months away. From how the team operates on a daily basis to wins and losses and potentially even competing for a championship, what are realistic expectations for Whittingham’s first year at Michigan?
Here’s what the head coach himself had to say recently.
“I expect to challenge for the Big Ten title every single year. That should be a given,” Whittingham said. “Every single year, we should be right there
with the top teams. Playoffs are a lofty goal, but you can’t get there unless we do well in the Big Ten. At Michigan, if you’re not thinking about the Big Ten championship every year, then something is wrong.”
According to FanDuel, the over/under win total is currently set at 8.5 wins. In the last two years under former head coach Sherrone Moore, Michigan went 17-9, including a 9-4 record in 2025.
The Wolverines are expected to improve from last season, but there’s a chance the record doesn’t reflect that due to their difficult schedule. Michigan opens up the season with non-conference matchups against Western Michigan, Oklahoma and UTEP. The Wolverines will be heavy favorites and should be able to handle Western Michigan and UTEP, but the battle with Oklahoma could loom very large as Michigan looks to pick up a marquee win over an SEC opponent before opening up Big Ten play.
Later in the season, the Wolverines will take on some of the Big Ten’s premier programs including Penn State and Indiana in October, before traveling to Oregon and Ohio State in November. Michigan certainly has a chance to compete for a Big Ten championship in 2026, but the daunting schedule could make Whittingham’s first season a bit underwhelming.
No matter what the final record is this season, the Wolverines should be much more disciplined under Whittingham. The Wolverines weren’t exactly structured in recent years, but that should change drastically with him at the helm now. During his time at Utah, Whittingham’s teams were known for attention to detail, discipline, physicality and toughness.
“Hopefully we’re disciplined, play smart football, and avoid sloppy and ignorant penalties. Just play the game the way that it’s supposed to be played,” Whittingham said when we asked how he expects the program to operate under his command. “So expectations are to be a tough, physical team that plays the game the right way, and is disciplined and plays smart.”
When it comes to Michigan, the expectation is to compete for championships every year, just like Whittingham said. However, even if the Wolverines fall short of contending for a Big Ten title or a berth in the playoffs, the expectation is Whittingham will continue to bring more stability and structure to a program that was in desperate need of just that.
