Seeing Bayern Munich included in the drawing for the DFB Pokal quarterfinals has become a rare treat for fans in recent years. But, following the club’s 3-2 victory over Union Berlin in the third round, Bayern have managed to qualify for the quarterfinals of the competition for the second time in six years.
The draw for said quarterfinals took place at 19:15 CET on Sunday and sees Bayern play against Rasenballsport Leipzig (nicknamed RB Leipzig) in the Allianz Arena, as captured by @iMiaSanMia. The energy
drink sponsored club overcame 2. Bundesliga side Magdeburg 3-1 in the third round and have played a convincing Bundesliga season thus far, gathering 29 points from 13 games to sit second in the table behind only Bayern themselves. Certainly, there were easier teams for Bayern to be drawn against.
Of course, home advantage will be key for Bayern, as will their recent form against Leipzig. These teams have faced each other twice before in this competition, with Bayern prevailing 6-5 on penalties the first time in 2019 before finishing them off 3-0 in the final. Furthermore, Bayern’s most recent match against the former SSV Markranstädt saw the Bavarians end up stomping them 6-0. If the Bavarians can keep this form up, then they will advance to the next round and make it to the semifinals of the DFB-Pokal for the first time since 2020, when they won the whole thing under Hansi Flick.
