Welcome to the second edition of Monday Stat Party, a weekly series showcasing the most peculiar (if not always pertinent) statistical developments from the past week of Mets baseball. How, you ask, were Jonathan Villar, Mike Baxter, and Christian Scott possibly related to anything that happened during the Mets’ trips to Cincinnati and Detroit? Those are the kinds of hard-hitting questions this series is prepared to answer. So without further ado, let the stat party begin…
MONDAY
Juan Soto, Brett Baty,
Jeff McNeil, and Luis Torrens each stole a base on Monday. It was the first time that four different Mets stole a base in the same game since August 1, 2012, when David Wright, Daniel Murphy, Mike Baxter, and Jason Bay did it in San Francisco.
Soto also became the fourth Met to hit a grand slam and triple in the same game, joining Dave Kingman (June 19, 1982), Darryl Strawberry (July 20, 1985), and José Valentín (July 8, 2006).
Edwin Díaz recorded his 250th career save, ranking fourth among active players (after Kenley Jansen, Craig Kimbrel, and Aroldis Chapman). It was also Díaz’s 25th save of the season, marking the fourth time that he’s reached 25 saves as a Met (2019, 2021, 2022, and now 2025). John Franco is the only other player in franchise history to accomplish that feat, having recorded 25 saves in a whopping seven seasons as a Met.
The Mets have now won seven of their last nine games on Labor Day, dating back to their epic comeback win in Washington on September 7, 2015.
TUESDAY
After becoming the first Met to win his first three major league starts, Nolan McLean became just the 63rd MLB player since 1901 to win his first four major league starts. The players who most recently accomplished the feat before McLean were Chase Anderson in 2014 and Gerrit Cole in 2013.
Exiting play on Tuesday, the Mets had scored 103 runs in their past twelve games, representing a new club record. The most runs the franchise had previously scored in a twelve-game span was 101, from June 8, 1990 to June 20, 1990.
WEDNESDAY
Casey Mize became the ninth No. 1 overall draft pick to earn a regular season win against the Mets. Only twice have multiple No. 1 picks gotten a win against the Mets in the same season. In 1992, Andy Benes and Tim Belcher did it. In 2015, Stephen Strasburg and Gerrit Cole did it, plus Luke Hochevar picked up the win for the Royals in Game 5 of the 2015 World Series. Had the Pirates been able to win Paul Skenes’ start of 6.0 IP and 1 ER against the Mets back in May, that list would have included 2025.
FRIDAY
It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Edwin Díaz was able to stay calm during his high-pressure, shoe-stopping save, as this was Díaz’s eighth appearance with the bases loaded and nobody out since joining the Mets in 2019. Only one other Met in that span has had as many appearances with the bases loaded and nobody out: Friday night’s starter, David Peterson.
Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch for the 15th time this season, joining Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, and Mark Canha as the only Mets to reach that mark.
SATURDAY
Jonah Tong recorded his second-straight outing of at least 5.0 IP, at least six strikeouts, and at most six hits allowed. Only 65 players have done this twice in a row to begin their MLB career, and as it turns out, six of them are Mets from the past 14 years: Matt Harvey, Steven Matz, Kodai Senga, Christian Scott, Nolan McLean, and now Tong.
Francisco Lindor recorded his 19th three-hit game of the season. The only Mets with more three-hit games in a single season are José Reyes and Lance Johnson, with Reyes racking up 20 in 2006 and Johnson tallying 24 in 1996.
Lindor also made some negative Mets history on Saturday, becoming the first Met to get caught stealing twice in one game since Jonathan Villar on May 25, 2021 against the Rockies.
SUNDAY
With his ninth-inning home run, Juan Soto has now recorded six home runs and six stolen bases over his last nine games. Only eight other players in MLB history have done this: Ken Williams (1922), Dale Murphy (1983), Eric Davis (1987), Barry Bonds (1994 & 1996), Larry Walker (1997), Carlos Beltran (2004), Ronald Acuña Jr. (2023), and Shohei Ohtani (2024).
Miscellaneous Mets stat of the week:
Brandon Nimmo is the Mets’ all-time walks leader in September/October, with 120 bases on balls in the final month-plus.
