According to a report by Mundo Deportivo, Leon Goretzka has asked Hansi Flick if he can join FC Barcelona after his current deal with Bayern Munich expires in the summer. The 30-year-old is officially
allowed to negotiate with new clubs starting from January.
Goretzka knows Flick well from their time together at FC Bayern. He was instrumental to the success of the team that won the sextuple in 2020, where he was a mainstay in the midfield alongside either Thiago Alcantara or Joshua Kimmich. Goretzka found more success in that system compared to his role under Vincent Kompany, where he seems like the odd man out.
This wouldn’t be the first time Barça have considered a move for Goretzka. They were one of the chief rivals to Bayern in 2018 when he left Schalke 04 on a free transfer. According to the report, Flick even considered signing him on loan last winter, when Barcelona were in need of a new physical midfielder to partner with Pedri and De Jong.
The report goes on to mention that the Catalans are currently well-equipped in midfield, and have no need for a player of Goretzka’s profile. However, Flick is still his former coach, and if he sees something in the player — maybe a move could materialize. After all, he is set to leave for free.
