The 2025 Gold Glove Awards have been announced and Max Fried takes home the trophy for the fourth time in his career. The previous three came consecutively in 2020-2022 with the Braves, and his four are the most Gold Glove Awards of any active pitcher. It is the second piece of fielding silverware he picks up this fall, also taking home the Fielding Bible Award as the best defensive pitcher in baseball.
Fried has always had a reputation as an excellent fielding pitcher and led all pitchers with ten
Defensive Runs Saved in 2025. His impact with the glove was multi-faceted, from fielding soft dribblers in front of the mound to picking off the runner at first. Fried already had an elite pickoff move before joining the Yankees, but conversations with Andy Pettitte over the spring seemed to unlock a new level as he picked off a career-high seven runners, tops among AL pitchers.
Fried becomes the first Yankees pitcher to win a Gold Glove since Mike Mussina in 2008 and the fourth to win the award alongside Mussina, Ron Guidry, and Bobby Shantz. He was the Yankees’ sole finalist in voting after Anthony Volpe, Alex Verdugo, and Juan Soto were all finalists last year, and he joins Volpe as one of two players to have won the award with the team.
The recognition comes as a nice consolation after a bittersweet ending to the season, Fried having given up seven runs in three innings of his ALDS Game 2 start against the Blue Jays. All the same, it was a successful first season in pinstripes for the 31-year-old southpaw, Fried finishing among the top-ten starting pitchers in innings pitched, ERA, FIP, and fWAR. He set new career highs in starts (32) and innings pitched (195.1), with an MLB-high 19 wins, 2.86 ERA, and 189 strikeouts.
