The flood gates have truly opened on MSU football. We knew the levy was on its way to cracking and it fully broke open. MSU lost another game, shocker, I know. I had MSU losing by 30, so there’s the bright spot. It wasn’t that bad. It has approached a point of being really difficult to watch. The fog over this program makes it so depressing that all the fun of fall college football has once again been sucked away. It is approaching some very dangerous territory and is getting more difficult to find
a way out. This week’s weather report will operate a bit back and forth as it seems to fit better with the barometric settings on the program.
Sun #1
Our first sun is going to the opportunity to glimpse the future QB1, Kayd Coffman. In a season that is truly pointless at the moment, the only potential benefit is assessing future starters and seeing if they will be worth the money to keep in the fold. Coffman definitely showed some superiority in passing ability to Alessio but beyond the first 4 passes, nothing worked. Coffman is supposed to be the heir apparent and perhaps even challenge to start next season. With Alessio and Fancher both scratched it was an opportunity for Coffman to show Spartan Nation a rainbow after the long storm. Unfortunately, with our lineup so depleted we didn’t get a great glimpse.
Cloud #1
Our first cloud is going to the opportunity to glimpse the future QB1, Kayd Coffman. Universe, I give up. I don’t know what the deal is with this program and injuries. Changing strength and conditioning coaches has not worked. As Fitzgerald said, this isn’t even happening in practice, so we can’t blame it on that being too strenuous. I enjoy reading old folklore, legends, fairytales, etc. Recently, I’ve been delving into stories about Baba Yaga. She’s a Slavic folklore witch who has many variations of stories. One story is about how she makes you face your greatest fears before she will aid you. If she feels you are unworthy, she will curse you. Someone at MSU has messed around and ticked off Baba Yaga and she is the one who has cursed us. I mean, there is no other answer for being down to your 3rd and 4th string QB’s and RB’s, lineman going down in game, down 3 LB’s and 4 CB’s. It is unheard of except that it has been trending at MSU for a few years now. Thank goodness there is a bye next week. Not because our guys will get healthy, no, that would be the non Baba Yaga curse. We are fortunate because we have an extra week to scout and recruit people from Home Depot and Meijer to make their MSU debut. There is no next man up left.
Sun #2
MSU actually hung for a quarter and some change. Granted, UCLA played sloppy and it is quite difficult to believe they are undefeated because they look overrated and ready for a defeat or two. The turnover with the opportunity to go up 14-7 was really a game changer. Now MSU is down 7. Take that play away and maybe the team develops a 4th string moxie that shatters everything and sends the Spartans to glory. Obviously that didn’t happen but the defense was holding its own a bit once again considering the lineup is made of cheese cloth. The offense just didn’t do its job to keep the momentum.
Cloud #2
Even with the opportunity to see the lack of depth and talent on this roster it is even scarier to think that most of these players are going to be gone next year. Even Coffman and Alessio are probably going to be hard to retain. Fitzgerald will really have to hit the portal hard and do some serious work to field a competitive lineup. With the opportunity to leave when things are going well for you are so easy, it seems players will take advantage of that and even if it is a smaller school but they can show their skill set on a winning team with hopes of the NFL after. I think this Fitz rebuild will hit its most crucial offseason and I have more doubts that I’d like.
Sun #3
Our final sun is without a doubt the fact that we have a bye. Halloween can be enjoyed without the terror of MSU football haunting your television. If you really want to have MSU football on the mind still there are some fabulous costume ideas. You could go as a deflated MSU football, you could go as an MSU player on crutches, you could go as a MSU football zombie that explains the lack of brains often seen in game, or just put a paper bag over your head. All of these options could bring some sun to your Halloween activities.
Cloud #3
In a year where Michigan football is garbage, MSU football is even more garbage and we will still get our butts handed to us in two weeks. In actuality it is difficult to see a win left on the schedule with the injuries that keep mounting up. Yes, even Rutgers feels more unattainable. This season has left us with two plays that could of brought two wins and then we would be having a very different conversation headed into the last stretch. It is unfortunate that we can’t play this Michigan team at our fullest strength. It would have been a nice barometer check. Instead, we will have the Home Depot All Stars suiting up. At least we’ll get to see some nice Kenneth Walker III and trouble with the snap clips.
MSU Hockey Hits a Drought
Not only did we have to suffer through the UCLA game on Saturday but Friday night had the Spartan hockey team facing New Hampshire and losing 1-0. It was deja vu from last year except this year MSU was grossly outshot and out played. They did manage to get a split with a 2-1 win on Saturday but the 2 goals in two games against NH after averaging 5 pregame this season is cause for alarm. The schedule is about to get much tougher. Adding insult to injury was Michigan pulling out a victory Friday night with .1 seconds left.
Not a lot of joy out there TOC for Spartan fans this week. Even the UConn exhibition was grim. Hockey should turn things around as well as the basketball team. Unless Baba Yaga has a greater reach as her hut runs around on its chicken legs. Let me know in the comments your suns and clouds and enjoy the Halloween week off of football.
