SC Freiburg, eh? Who knew?
The table-toppers of the Bundesliga are from the Black Forest and not Bavaria.
Three matchdays into the Bundesliga season, Bayern Munich have climbed into fourth place with seven points, following a hard-fought 2-1 victory over promoted SV Elversberg.
The result was hardly vintage Bayern Munich, but it was an important one after the disappointing draw at Schalke last weekend. Harry Kane’s late winner ultimately ensured the champions left with all three points:
The early table makes the result particularly valuable. Borussia Dortmund and Freiburg remain perfect, sitting on nine points, while Bayern Munich is just two points behind the leaders. RB Leipzig’s emphatic 5-0 victory over Hamburg also puts them on seven points, level with Bayern.
For Bayern Munich, there is little reason to panic about the position. Three points from SV Elversberg was the primary objective, especially with the club balancing Bundesliga and Champions League commitments. The bigger concern is that Bayern have already dropped points against Schalke after drawing 0-0.
That makes the upcoming home match against Union Berlin especially important. Bayern Munich cannot afford to continually give their rivals opportunities to create an early cushion. Borussia Dortmund has started perfectly, and SC Freiburg have matched them, while RB Leipzig is lurking.
