Former Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott recently visited training camp for the Los Angeles Rams. He joined The Jim Rome Show to talk about his experience.
McDermott was highly complimentary of Sean McVay’s operation in Los Angeles. It seemed to be an enlightening experience
for someone who will likely be back in the head coach cycle as soon as next year.
Quarterback Matthew Stafford and others have said that the team’s recent practices are as competitive as they’ve seen. The Rams are performing at a high level ahead of the regular season. Expectations are sky-high, and McVay deserves credit for helping the roster cut through media narratives and staying focused on the mission.

When you get a chance to see someone who is really good at what they do, you can just soak it in. I was a sponge—soaking it in.
Did McVay try to hire McDermott?
Well, you know, I thought for a second there the visit was going so well. I’m like, if he asks me to stay, I might consider it but only if I get to stay at his house. I’m done living in dorm rooms (for camp)… It was a great visit.
It’s probably unlikely that McDermott would join McVay’s staff at this point of the season—or at least it would be rare for a hiring for someone of this public profile. Whether McDermott is a longer term fit for Los Angeles is the better question.
Rams defensive coordinator Chris Shula garnered attention this past offseason for teams with an opening at head coach. His name is certain to be included in the rumor mill again for 2027. Bringing in a former head coach would mitigate a potential downturn if McDermott can’t find his way back to a head seat. The Rams have no shortage of big personalities on the defense, including Myles Garrett, Trent McDuffie, and others. This might not be a role well-suited for a first-time coordinator.
