The hunt for a striker continues as Barcelona search the market for a number nine at the request of coach Hansi Flick, who wants a replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
Julián Álvarez is the dream but that dream appears more and more distant, and the other two main targets (João Pedro and Junior Kroupi) are also out of reach for multiple reasons.
Hansi Flick spoke to the press on Monday and was asked about the possibility of using his current forward options, such as Lamine Yamal and new signings Anthony
Gordon and Karim Adeyemi, in a false nine role.
Flick did at least entertain the thought, and thinks there’s enough quality in the current options to play the false nine role if possible.
“Lamine has played a couple of games with us (as a false nine). He’s a fantastic, world-class player, and he can adapt to that. Our focus is on him playing as a ‘7’, but we’ll see what happens. Gordon and Adeyemi can play as a number nine and on both wings. We have many options, and we’ll see what happens.”
Flick is right that Barça have a ton of depth and versatility in attack, and they can still put up big numbers throughout the season. But to truly get over the hump there must be at least one player at the striker spot who guarantees goal contributions in the most decisive games, and it’s safe to question whether or not Barça have that currently.
